Thunderbird Park, Victoria

By 1941 the students were becoming quite well known through their performances and visual art. That year they were invited to perform at the opening of Thunderbird Park at the Provincial Museum (now the Royal British Columbia Museum) in Victoria, BC. On their return to Nk'Mip, students drew what they remembered best about their trip, to create two friezes documenting their travels.

The children were celebrated as honoured guests in Victoria. Their two-day visit included a trip to a movie theatre, meals in restaurants, guided tours, performances and radio interviews-all of which is recorded in their drawings of this memorable time. The event was recorded on a small filmstrip and in photographs in newspapers. The children's drawings, film and photographs documenting the trip give great insight into the different perspectives of adults and children.
